John P. Hayes was appointed President, Corus Radio for Corus Entertainment in July 2001.
Mr. Hayes began his career in 1971 with Taft Broadcasting as both Sales Manager and Station Manager for WGRQ-FM (now WGRF) in Buffalo. In 1977, Mr. Hayes became General Manager for KZOK AM/FM in Seattle where he took the station to a profitable position for the first time. Two years later, he was appointed Vice President and General Manager of KYUU in San Francisco and within a year, led the station from number 23 to number four in a market of 30 stations and to the distinction of becoming NBC’s first profitable FM station. Mr. Hayes moved to New York in 1984 as Vice President and General Manager of WNBC AM.
In 1987, Mr. Hayes became President and Chief Operating Officer of Fairmont Communications Corporation. In this role, he was credited with the successful transformation of a declining group of nine stations in five markets. In 1990, with the backing of Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and Odyssey Partners, Mr. Hayes pursued the long-held goal of starting his own company, Alliance Broadcasting, focused on creating value in acquired assets through improved operations. The company was sold to Infinity Broadcasting for $275 million in 1996.
Mr. Hayes moved to the U.K. in 1998 to work with Goldman Sachs, making media investments in the U.K. and Europe. Based in London, he became an investor and Director of Skyrock, a French national radio network, and Giraudy, the French outdoor advertising company. Mr. Hayes returned to the U.S. in 2000 and became Chairman and CEO of RadioAmp, a streaming media company based in Boston that provided private label radio services to Internet portals.
Mr. Hayes is Vice-Chairman of the Radio Board and a member of the Executive Board of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters; Chairman, Radio Executive Committee, BBM; Chairman, Executive Committee, Radio Marketing Bureau.
