John Ciampa Profile :
Dir. - Geophysical Services - Spectra Engineering, Architecture & Surveying PC

John Ciampa Biography :

Performed various environmental consulting activities including ground penetrating radar and electromagnetic surveying (GPR, EM), subsurface hydrogeologic evaluation of hazardous waste sites, water supply exploration, analytical evaluation of groundwater pumping test, and numerical modeling of groundwater equipotentials at a proposed mine site. Directed and participated in several geophysical surveys to non-invasively evaluate subsurface conditions, included were: a GPR and EM survey of multiple fill and disturbed areas to identify possible buried drums and other metal objects in connection with a property transaction; GPR surveys to identify a suspected underground tank location and confirm the location of two known tanks prior to a site investigation and remediation project; a GPR survey of a historical cemetery to locate gravesites and protect the burial area from physical disturbance during construction activities; a GPR survey of a limestone rock quarry to identify possible karst and fracture features capable of transmitting groundwater into the quarry. Responsible for technical management, environmental assessment and hazardous waste remediation for several areas associated with a large industrial facility in Western Massachusetts. This included development of proposed technical activities and budgets, management of outside contractors, and technical briefings to management, government agencies and the public. Directed detailed subsurface investigations of former manufacturing and waste areas. Investigations included the use of geophysical testing techniques, installation of numerous boreholes/wells, evaluation of appropriate drilling and sampling methodologies, and evaluation of the migration of groundwater, chemical constituents, and oil (LNAPL, DNAPL). Geophysical investigation techniques included seismic refraction, ground penetrating radar, electromagnetics, and resistivity. Responsible for the environmental testing of numerous municipal landfills and inactive hazardous sites throughout New York State. Evaluated geologic data, borehole/surface geophysical data, groundwater occurrence, flow in porous/fractured media, and groundwater chemistry. Provided technical management and assistance to a New York State Commission that was responsible for the siting and geotechnical characterization of potential sites for low-level radioactive waste disposal. Responsible for development of geotechnical site characterization plans for potential near-surface and mine disposal sites. This included the technical and quality assurance procedures for geophysical surveys, soil sampling, monitoring well installation, and groundwater sampling. Group manager for the geophysical operations of the Powder River Basin oil and gas exploration program. Included was the planning, testing and management of seismic acquisition and signal processing programs. Tested various field seismic energy sources and signal receiving arrays. Performed geologic interpretation and mapping of seismic reflection data incorporating geological/geophysical well logs to generate exploration prospects. Utilized geophysical models and analyzed seismic waveforms to evaluate subsurface reservoir properties. Managed the implementation of advanced signal processing programs to enhance data resolution, minimize noise, and perform stratigraphic data analysis. Performed geophysical evaluations, seismic interpretation, and petroleum evaluations in the Wyoming overthrust belt. Planned, tested and supervised seismic reflection acquisition and processing programs in rugged mountain terrain areas. Performed detailed geophysical analyses to solve acoustic imaging problems associated with structurally complex areas including: the generation of velocity functions and utilization of a computer program to convert seismic time data to depth; forward ray trace modeling; and, inverse modeling utilizing a depth migration program. Received extensive geophysical training assignments at two major oil and gas exploration companies over a 15-month time period. Included were: five months of seismic signal processing and data acquisition training; ten months of data interpretation and mapping in the following project areas, Offshore Gulf Coast, Uinta Basin, Offshore East Coast, and West Texas. Relevant Training: Numerous college and technical training courses in physics, mathematics and geophysics, including: seismic wave propagation, acoustic signal processing, seismic data interpretation, gravitational and magnetic fields, electromagnetics, wave theory, mathematical methods in physics, advanced calculus, differential equations, mechanics. Industry courses in six-sigma quality analysis and project management.
