John C. Makinson (52) has served as a member of our board of directors and chairman of our board since December 2002. Mr. Makinson also served on our board from February 2000 to October 2000. He has served as chief executive officer of The Penguin Group since July 2002 and chairman since May 2001. He currently serves as a director of Pearson plc and is a member of the Pearson plc management committee. From April 1996 to April 2002, Mr. Makinson served as chief financial officer of Pearson plc. From 1994 to 1996, he was the managing director of the Financial Times newspaper where he was responsible for the production, distribution and marketing of the newspaper worldwide. He joined the Financial Times from Makinson Cowell, a specialist independent consultancy firm that advises leading British companies on their relationship with the financial community. He co-founded and ran Makinson Cowell from 1989 to 1994. From 1986 to 1989, he held the position of vice chairman of Saatchi & Saatchi’s US holding company. Mr. Makinson serves on the board of directors of George Weston Limited, a food processing and distribution company headquartered in Toronto, Canada. |
