Joan Carney Biography :

Joan Carney is both an Educational and Rehabilitation Program Director who has specialized in the re-entry of pediatric neurorehabilitation patients to their community.

Biographical Sketch:

Ms. Carney received her undergraduate degree from The Catholic University of America in Special Education. She taught for 8 years in the Prince Georges County Public School system in Maryland while completing her master’s degree in Special Education and Rehabilitation at the George Washington University in 1981. She came to work at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in 1986 where her positions have always focused on the return to community and school life for the Institute’s pediatric neurorehabilitation patients. She is currently the Director of two programs within the KKI continuum of rehabilitation, The Specialized Transition Program at Fairmount and the Home and Community Rehabilitation Program. Ms. Carney also coordinates a training grant providing consultation, training, and technical assistance to school and community personnel throughout the State of Maryland regarding children with specialized health needs and their inclusion within the community. She speaks both locally and nationally addressing topics of community and school reintegration following pediatric brain injury and other disabling conditions. She is currently a seeking her doctoral degree in special education and rehabilitation from Johns Hopkins University.
