Joanne Giordano was named Vice President, Public Affairs and Communications, in December 2006. Reporting to the Government Relations Senior Vice President, she is responsible for all internal and external communications for the Postal Service, including public affairs, media relations, corporate messaging, events and promotions, design and brand equity, employee communications, speechwriting, crisis communications, and overseeing a nationwide network of communications professionals.
A communications executive with more than 20 years of experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, Giordano most recently served as head of public affairs for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) where she is credited with branding foreign aid as "From The American People." She joined USAID in 2001 to support the agency's mission and operations in more than 100 countries.
Prior to that she was Senior Vice President, Communications, at America's Promise The Alliance for Youth, a national nonprofit founded by Colin Powell that focuses on the positive development of America's young people.
Giordano spent 12 years with the communications consulting firm Burson-Marsteller, in the company's New York and Singapore offices, rising from Account Representative to Vice President and leaving the firm in 1997 as Global Client Leader. During her tenure with the firm, Giordano spearheaded a highly successful campaign for the Postal Service Olympic sponsorship in 1992.
Over the course of her career, Giordano's expertise in communications has achieved both recognition and business results; her accolades include four Silver Anvils from the Public Relations Society of America. She received a Bachelor of Science in public relations from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.
