Jim Stanley Biography :

Jim Stanley, the former head coach of the Michigan Panthers (USFL) and Oklahoma State University (O.S.U.), begins his 12th season in pro personnel after coaching the Cardinals’ defensive line in 1995.

Stanley, a 13-year NFL coaching veteran, joined the Cardinals in 1995 following six seasons with the Houston Oilers, including 1993 when the Oilers set a club record with 52 quarterback sacks and ranked first in the NFL in both rushing defense (79.6 yards per game) and interceptions (26). Under Stanley’s guidance, Houston also logged 50 sacks in 1992.

Before joining the Oilers, Stanley served as defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1986.

From 1983-84, he compiled a 22 14 record as head coach of the Panthers, a span that included a 12 6 mark, the USFL championship in 1983.

He was defensive line coach in 1979 for the New York Giants and from 1980-82 with the Atlanta Falcons.

As the six-year (1973-78) head coach at O.S.U., the Cowboys posted a 35 33 2 composite record and earned bowl victories in 1974 (Fiesta) and ’76 (Tangerine). The latter 93 squad was Big Eight Conference co-champion. During his Stillwater stay, he also was selected to coach in the East-West Shrine Game (1973), the Hula Bowl (1977), and the Japan Bowl (1977).

Prior to his promotion to the Oklahoma State head-coaching position, Stanley was the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator/assistant head coach for the 1972 season in his second stint at O.S.U.

Earlier, he was defensive coordinator for the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1971-72), the U.S. Naval Academy (1969-70), and O.S.U. (1963-68). His first two college coaching positions were as an assistant at Southern Methodist (1961) and Texas-El Paso (1962).

Stanley began his coaching career in the Amarillo, TX high school system from 1959-60.

As a player, Stanley was a three-year starter at Texas A&M under legendary Head Coach Paul Bear Bryant. He played offense (guard) and defensive tackle for the Aggies who went undefeated in 1956.

Stanley and his wife, Sylvia, have four grown children daughters Rhonda and Starlyn, and sons Mark and Matthew.
