Ms. Veiga has a varied civil litigation practice with its primary emphasis in employment law. She has defended both public and private entities in cases involving discrimination under both federal and state laws, claims under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, retaliatory discharge, breach of contract, violations of provisions of employee handbooks and policy manuals, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Colorado Wage Act, libel and slander, invasion of privacy, intentional interference with existing and prospective contracts, and outrageous conduct. She has defended clients before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Colorado Civil Rights Commission and has advised clients with regard to all aspects of the employment relationship. In addition to her employment practice, Ms. Veiga has defended a wide variety of claims including actions for professional negligence, personal injury matters, commercial litigation, including construction defect litigation, and workers compensation. She has personally handled all phases of litigation beginning with the answer and motion practice, through discovery and ultimately trial. She has represented clients in both state and federal court and on all levels of appeal. Ms. Veiga was admitted to practice in Colorado in 1987. She received her Juris Doctor from The National Law Center The George Washington University, Washington D.C., in 1987, with Honors; and she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Colorado in 1983 with a Major in Political Science. Ms. Veiga is a member of the Colorado Bar Association, Denver Bar Association, and the Colorado Women's Bar Association. In addition to her work at Hall & Evans, Ms. Veiga is a member of the Colorado General Assembly. Ms. Veiga was first elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 1996 and served until July, 2003, when she was elected to fill a vacancy in the Colorado State Senate. Ms. Veiga was re-elected to the Colorado State Senate in November, 2004 and is currently serving a four-year term. Ms. Veiga is Chair of the Business, Labor and Technology Committee, is Vice Chair of the Finance Committee, and serves on the Appropriations and Legal Services Committee. |
