Jeffrey H. Kaufman, managing partner of the firm's Trademark and Copyright Practice Group, and a member of the firm's Board of Directors, practices primarily in the areas of trademark, copyright, and unfair competition law, with an emphasis on counseling and assisting clients in protecting their intellectual property law rights and anti-counterfeiting activities. Mr. Kaufman has extensive experience practicing before the USPTO Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, as well as enforcing clients' rights in federal district courts. He represents a broad range of international and domestic companies in both high technology and more traditional industries.
Mr. Kaufman graduated in 1977 from the George Mason University School of Law, and in 1974 from the University of Maryland. He began his career as a Trademark Attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Today, Mr. Kaufman's practice of law includes representing companies engaged in e-commerce, and he possesses extensive experience in domain name and Internet-related intellectual property issues, as well as traditional trademark and copyright enforcement activities. He has been the chair of the American Intellectual Property Law Association’s (AIPLA) subcommittee on anti-counterfeiting, and has been selected as the first chair of that organization’s newly-created standing committee on Anti-counterfeiting and Anti-piracy.
He has been extensively involved in the development of the law relating to domain name issues and trademarks. He served as an early member of the International Trademark Association's (INTA) special task force on Internet Domain Names, later becoming chair of the subcommittee that worked with the U.S. Administration and Congress, and the evolution and creation of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). He presently serves as a member of the IPC (Intellectual Property Coalition) of the Domain Name Supporting Organization of ICANN, representing the interests of the American Bar Association's Intellectual Property Law Section. He has been a frequent lecturer and author on issues relating to intellectual property, including making presentations at INTA's Trademarks in Cyberspace.
Mr. Kaufman has been named an arbiter by both the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the National Arbitration Forum (NAF) for resolution of domain name disputes under the ICANN Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy.
Mr. Kaufman is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is a member of the Bars of the Commonwealth of Virginia, the State of Maryland, and the District of Columbia. He has appeared before numerous federal district courts in intellectual property matters. He is a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA), previously serving on INTA's Trademark Reporter Editorial Board.
He is also a member of the European Communities Trade Mark Association (ECTA) and the Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Industrielle (AIPPI).
