James R. Coddington is the vice president of generation operations for Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy, with overall responsibility for the operation of the company’s fossil-fueled and hydroelectric generating units.He was previously vice president of fossil operations, responsible for the utility’s
coal- and oil-fired power plants, representing approximately two-thirds of its electric generating capacity. Prior to that position, Coddington was manager of fossil generation, accountable
for the overall business management of 2,900 megawatts (MW) of
baseload coal plants, 1,480 MW of oil and natural gas peaking units, and
400 MW of combustion turbine peaking capacity. From 1991 to 2001, he served as the director of the equipment services department.
From 1985 to 1991, he was the general supervisor of the boiler and
piping section.Coddington joined Consumers Energy in 1972 as a plant engineer and has worked through a series of increasingly responsible positions in the utility’s electric generating business. Coddington graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, and attended the University of Michigan’s public utility executive program. He is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. From 1992 to 2000, he served as an appointed member of the Michigan State Board of Boiler Rules.
