Jim Black has been an entrepreneur and new enterprise advocate since 1980. Most recently he was Chairman and CEO of AvData Systems from 1990 until the company merged with ITC^DeltaCom in July 1999 (NASDAQ: ITCD). He served as a Senior Vice President of ITCD until July 2000 and continued to serve on the Board of Directors until October 2002.
In 1980 Mr. Black co-founded VideoStar Connections, a pioneering satellite business television company. He served as Executive Vice President and on the Board of VideoStar until 1989, when Electronic Data Systems acquired the company. Subsequent to VideoStar, Mr. Black was a founding investor in a number of private enterprises. Prior to his entrepreneurial activities, he held positions in sales, marketing and program management for Scientific Atlanta.
Mr. Black is currently Chairman of the MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta, a nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to assisting entrepreneurs and encouraging new enterprise. He also serves as a director of several private corporations, including Learn.net (an on-line training and learning management system) and Air Quality Sciences (an indoor environmental testing and product certification business). He is also an advisor to several venture capital funds.
Mr. Black earned bachelor and master degrees in engineering from MIT and an MBA from Harvard Business School. His career started with the Apollo program in 1969, and he also served as a captain in the Air Force during the Vietnam era. |
