E. James Prendergast is vice president and chief technology officer for DuPont Electronic & Communication Technologies. He joined DuPont on Sept. 1, 2002. His broad technical background has leveraged DuPont's strong materials and technology base to accelerate growth in the 'high-tech' markets of electronics and communications. His responsibilities include leading the research and development functions within this platform, coordinating those long-term applied research efforts in DuPont corporate R&D centers relevant to this platform and searching out new opportunities for growth. In February 2003, he was elected to the DuPont Photomasks (DPMI) Board of Directors and remained through the successful acquisition of DPMI by Toppan in April 2005.
Prior to joining DuPont, Dr. Prendergast was vice president and director of the Physical Sciences Research Laboratories, headquartered in Tempe, Ariz. These laboratories are part of Motorola Labs, and during his tenure he directed long-range research in future integrated systems (memory, semiconductor materials, nanostructures, quantum devices, etc.), energy (thermoelectrics, fuel cells, etc.), lab-on-a-chip (microfluidics, DNA analyses, etc), and various speculative 'reach-out' initiatives. Other roles he held at Motorola include the director of the Wireless Research & Development Laboratory, the director of the Microcontroller and Mixed-Mode Technology Center and, chief technologist and director of Strategy, all within Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector (now Freescale Semiconductor). In addition to over ten years of experience at Motorola, he worked for AT&T Bell Laboratories for over twelve years as a distinguished member of Technical Staff and supervisor of a semiconductor modeling group.
Dr. Prendergast received a bachelor's degree in science and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, both from Sydney University in Australia. He received a doctorate in electrical engineering from Cambridge University. He was a Lightoller Scholar at Cambridge University and a University Medallist at Sydney University.
