Research Summary:

The focus of Dr. Roane’s research has been on the assessment and treatment of severe behavior problems displayed by individuals with developmental disabilities. His work is focused on identifying the variables that contribute to the maintenance of behavior problems and developing interventions based on these variables. Related to this work has been his research on the identification of stimuli that function as effective reinforcers for children with developmental disabilities. This work has been conducted to evaluate the extent to which different variables affect a child’s motivation to complete work-related tasks or to not engage in destructive behavior. His current research interests focus on the application of economic principles in the design and effectiveness of behavioral interventions. For example, his research may examine the interaction between the amount of responding that must occur to receive a preferred item and the amount of reinforcement received and how this interaction affects the effectiveness of an intervention. His research also focuses on the identification and modification of idiosyncratic variables that may affect appropriate and maladaptive behavior. His research interests related to the outpatient clinic program is focused on the role of caregivers in the assessment and treatment of problematic behavior, caregiver training, and treatment acceptability.
