Heather Egan Sussman is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm's Boston office. She is a member of the Firm's Labor and Employment and OSHA, MSHA & Catastrophe Response Groups.
In her employment practice, Heather advises clients on the wide variety of state and federal laws that govern the workplace, including laws on wages and hours, fair employment practices, fair pay, disability, reasonable accommodations, discrimination, family and medical leave, reductions in force, plant closings and more. She also negotiates executive compensation agreements, and helps employers draft and enforce non-competition, non-solicitation, non-disclosure and inventions agreements. Heather represents clients in litigation matters before the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as well as before state and federal courts nation-wide. She also represents clients in arbitration proceedings and has successfully mediated both large and small employment-related cases on behalf of her clients.
Heather also practices traditional labor law, representing management in collective bargaining negotiations, union organizing campaigns, work stoppages, labor injunction proceedings, and unfair labor practice charges and related proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board. She advises clients on the National Labor Relations Act and the Railway Labor Act, as well as troubled companies in the areas of labor and pension reorganizing under Chapter 11 of the Federal Bankruptcy Code.
As a member of the firm's OSHA Group, Heather advises employers on the state and federal laws that govern health and safety in the workplace. She represents clients selected for OSHA inspections and during OSHA inspections following accidents in the workplace. She also represents clients who have received citations and negotiates settlements and appropriate abatement and challenges unwarranted citations or unlawful inspection activity.
While attending law school, Heather was a member of the prestigious National Moot Court Team. She earned her bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, where she was awarded departmental honors and named a Commonwealth Scholar. Heather also earned a Certificate of French Proficiency from the University of Grenoble in Grenoble, France.
Heather is an active member of the Boston Bar Association and the American Bar Associations. She is a member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar and the Bar of the United States District Court, District of Massachusetts. Heather also volunteers regularly in her community.
