Giordano Seragnoli Biography :

Giordano Seragnoli was born in Dozza, Italy, in 1937. After graduating from the University of Bologna with a Master’s degree in Electronics, he joined Ducati, a Thomson Group company, as a designer of radio frequency products for consumer applications.

In 1965, Seragnoli joined SGS Microelettronica, a forerunner company of ST, to work on the design and applications of radio frequency components. He then moved to contribute in various roles within the Company, including in linear integrated circuit design and applications, marketing, and strategic marketing. In 1984, Seragnoli was appointed to set up and manage the newly created Subsystems Division, which designed and produced many original products, particularly in the area of accessories for mobile equipment. In 1987, he was promoted to Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Subsystems and Radio Frequency division, with additional responsibility for Package R&D and Back-End Automation.

In 1994, Seragnoli became Director for Worldwide Back-End Manufacturing, overseeing the establishment and growth of ST’s assembly and test plants around the world, as well as the Company’s activities in new package development and automation.

Based on experience gained in subsystems automated manufacturing, Seragnoli pioneered many advances in automated assembly and testing of semiconductors. Under his leadership, ST introduced the world’s first fully automated lines, which have reduced cycle times from 4-5 days to less than one hour. Benefiting from these efficiencies, ST’s manufacturing volumes have increased by 600% since 1994, while the number of employees in the Back-End organization has grown by a modest 40% over the same time period, and the increased production effectiveness has brought substantial savings of hundreds of millions of dollars.

ST’s new-package development, directed by Seragnoli for the last 20 years, has produced a wide range of innovative concepts, from Power IC and MEMS packages to stacked BGAs (Ball Grid Array), System-In-Packages, and the world’s first lead-free BGA packages. In the area of environmental protection, Seragnoli has guided the Company’s back-end operations to reduce the energy and water consumption by around 10% per year since 1997 and they completely eliminated landfill waste in 2003.

In 2001, Seragnoli received the decoration of "Officier du Wissam Al Alaoui" from His Majesty Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, for his contribution to high technology development in the country, where ST operates two large back-end plants, in Ain Sebaa and Bouskoura.

A key contributor to the Company’s success for more than forty years, Giordano Seragnoli will retire at the end of Q2 2006.
