George M. Smart was elected to Ball Corporation’s board of directors in 2005. He is chairman of the board FirstEnergy Corp. of Akron Ohio.
Mr. Smart is former president of Sonoco-Phoenix Inc.; past chairman of the board and president of Phoenix Packaging Corporation; and past president and chief executive officer of Central States Can Co. a division of Van Dorn Company.
Mr. Smart joined Van Dorn Company in 1969 as a staff assistant. He was a sales representative for Central States Can Co. from 1970 until 1976 when he was named director of marketing. He served as president and CEO from 1978 to 1993.
Mr. Smart also currently serves on the board of directors for Unizan Financial Corp. in Canton Ohio. Other past directorships include Commercial Intertech Corporation Belden & Blake Corporation and Van Dorn Company. He is also past chairman of the Can Manufacturers Institute. |
