Gene Fendler Biography :

Mr. Fendler is the firm's president and managing partner. His litigation and trial experiences span more than 30 years and include class action matters in both casualty and business cases. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Fendler served as a law clerk to the Honorable Alvin B. Rubin, District Judge, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. He has tried to verdict or judgment more than 75 lawsuits in state and federal courts throughout Louisiana and in Texas and has served as lead trial counsel in numerous mass tort and class action cases. He has more than two decades of experience in maritime law and formerly chaired Liskow & Lewis’ Casualty, Toxic Tort, Aviation and Products Liability practice group. Mr. Fendler's multiple trial achievements involve casualty litigation, transactional disputes and patent infringement matters. Representative cases include: Currently serving as lead counsel in a class action suit with more than 3,000 members for claims arising out of a fire and explosion at a chemical plant. Lead trial counsel in a seven-week trial and seven-week AAA arbitration in a $250 million offshore casualty claim for loss of a deep-water production facility. Successfully defended an international chemical manufacturer in a multimillion-dollar construction dispute in a two-week arbitration in Boston, Massachusetts. In the longest jury trial in the history of St. Charles Parish, Mr. Fendler was trial defense counsel in a suit alleging serious, permanent brain damage as a result of toxic exposures caused by his client, a chemical company. The jury returned a defense verdict. Served as lead counsel, and defeated class certification, in the defense of over 20,000 toxic tort claims arising out of the capsizing of a tank barge in the Mississippi River in the middle of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Prevailed on all liability claims in an action involving more than 17,000 claimants. Mr. Fendler was lead counsel in the matter which arose out of a tug and barge casualty in the Mississippi River. Obtained a multimillion-dollar settlement for his client, a pipeline owner, for damages arising out of a drilling rig that punctured a pipeline after being cast adrift in a hurricane. Following a two-week jury trial, he obtained a successful jury verdict in favor of the hotel management company facing racial discrimination claims brought when eight former employees of the hotel were terminated. Mr. Fendler obtained a directed verdict in a month-long, multiparty jury trial alleging serious personal injuries from a construction accident. Successfully prosecuted a claim for patent infringement for the manufacturer of an oil field tool. A Master of the Bench of the Judge John C. Boutall American Inn of Court and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, Mr. Fendler is vice-chair of the Maritime and Energy Law Committee of the International Association of Defense Counsel. Mr. Fendler, a licensed private pilot, is active in many leading legal professional organizations and is a frequent speaker for those groups.
