Geeta Sarphare Biography :

Dr. Geeta Sarphare, licensed psychologist, is the Clinical Director of the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic at Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is also a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Sarphare received her Ph.D. from the Ohio State University Department of Psychology with a specialization in Developmental Disabilities/Mental Retardation. She also has a Masters Degree in Special Education Teaching; a Specialist in Education in Community College and Higher Education; a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Biochemistry; and a Bachelor of Education in Special Education. While earning her Ph.D., Dr. Sarphare received extensive course work in psychopharmacology and outpatient clinical training conducting individual/play therapy, testing, and parent training. Her focus of study was “Anxiety Disorders in children with mental retardation: Developmental considerations,” which is currently an area of research she is pursuing at the Kennedy Krieger Institute.

Dr. Sarphare has been providing services to clients with Mental Retardation over 20 years. Dr. Sarphare provided early intervention services for children ages six years old and younger who have behavioral disorders and developmental delays. While earning her Ph.D., she also worked as a research assistant on several projects involving psychotropic medications, and taught basic psychology to undergraduate students. At the Rosewood Center, a State Residential Facility, Dr. Sarphare directed special forensic projects and provided psychological services to adults with developmental disabilities/mental retardation. She also served as consulting psychologist to providers such as the Community Based Alternatives Initiative (CBAI) and the Arc of Southern Maryland (IBMS project), conducting in-staff training and training parents to implement treatment plans in home-setting.

In the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, Dr. Sarphare provides individual, family, play therapies, and parent education.

Dr. Sarphare is licensed by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists and the Delaware Division of Professional Regulations. She is certified by the Council for the National Register as a Health Service Provider in Psychology. She is a member of the Maryland Psychological Association.
