Frank Bonsal Biography :

Mr. Bonsal is a founding member of Red Abbey. Mr. Bonsal formed his relationship with Dr. Goelet in 1990 when he joined the Board of Directors of Molecular Tool, Inc., a Baltimore, MD based life sciences company that was founded by Dr. Goelet. In 1997, Mr. Bonsal and Dr. Goelet launched their personal life sciences investment program, as described in Historical Investment Activity and Performance. Mr. Bonsal was a founding partner of New Enterprise Associates (NEA), one of the country’s largest venture capital firms. NEA invests in early-stage companies and works with management to nurture and build companies of real and lasting value. During his tenure at NEA, Mr. Bonsal served on the Board of Directors of a number of life sciences companies, including Aspect Medical Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASPM), Biopure Corporation (NASDAQ: BPUR), Cantab Pharmaceuticals PLC (acquired by Xenova Group PLC), GeneScreen, Inc. (acquired by Orchid Biosciences, Inc.), IBAH, Inc. (acquired by Omnicare, Inc.), Molecular Tool, Inc. (acquired by Orchid Biosciences, Inc.), Synaptic Pharmaceuticals Corporation (acquired by H. Lundbeck A/S), and Vertex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRTX). Additionally, Mr. Bonsal played an active role in a number of NEA’s life sciences investments, including Alkermes, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALKS), Anadys Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (S-1 filed 11/14/03), Bethesda Research Laboratories, Inc. (acquired by Life Technologies, Inc.), Dura Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (acquired by Elan Corporation), GelTex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (acquired by Genzyme General), Genetic Therapy, Inc. (acquired by Sandoz), Pyxis Corporation (acquired by Cardinal Health, Inc.), and Sepracor, Inc. (NASDAQ: SEPR). In addition to his investment program with Dr. Goelet, Mr. Bonsal has made numerous personal investments in health care and life sciences companies, including Concentric Medical, Inc., ElderHealth, Inc., Proxima Therapeutics, Inc., Renovis, Inc., and Vela Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Mr. Bonsal has also been a key investor and advisor in a number of venture capital firms during the past 10 years, including Amadeus Capital Partners, Boulder Ventures, Novak Biddle Venture Partners, Sterling Venture Partners, Trellis Ventures, Venturehouse, and Windward Ventures. Mr. Bonsal is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and a member of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Endowment Board. Also, Mr. Bonsal serves on the Boards of Directors of five technology companies: Advertising.com, AWS Convergence Technologies, Inc., Ceratech, CIBERNET Corporation and COVEGA Corporation, as well as an investment advisory firm, Brown Investment Advisory and Trust Co. Prior to co-founding NEA in 1978, Mr. Bonsal was a General Partner of Alex. Brown & Sons, Inc. Mr. Bonsal received a BA in Economics from Princeton University in 1959.
