Mr. Murphy served as Vice Chairman of the Board and Executive Officer, General Electric Company from 1997 until his retirement in 1999. He reported to Mr. John F. Welch, Chairman and CEO, and was a member of the GE Corporate Executive Office.
Mr. Murphy led the GE Aircraft Engines business as President and CEO from 1993 to 1997. GE Aircraft Engines is a global market leader in the design, production support and servicing of gas turbine engines for commercial, military, and marine and industrial applications. Until its 1993 merger with Martin Marietta Corporation, he was President and CEO of GE Aerospace a leading and diversified supplier of communications, electronic and other high-technology products and services for military, civil and commercial applications. He became Senior Vice President of GE Communications and Information Services in 1986 when RCA merged with GE.
Previously, he was an Executive Vice President of RCA, responsible for the operation of Communications and Electronic Services and for the Corporate International Development division. Before joining RCA, Mr. Murphy served as a litigation attorney with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and as an attorney with the Central Intelligence Agency.
He graduated with a law degree from Fordham University Law School in 1959. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he earned an LL.M degree in International law from Georgetown University.
Mr. Murphy was a member of President Reagan’s National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee, and is the former chairman and a permanent member of the Board of Directors of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association. Mr. Murphy serves as a director of Lockheed Martin Corporation, BellSouth Corporation from 1999 to 2004, and trustee of St. Francis Hospital. |
