Eoghan Casey's Biography :

Eoghan Casey Director of Training Services Eoghan Casey is one of the leaders in the field of digital forensics and high-technology crime investigations. He co-manages the firm s technical operations in the areas of computer forensics, cyber-crime response, incident handling, and electronic discovery. He maintains an active docket of cases himself and has extensive experience managing complex investigations and preserving, harvesting, and analyzing relevant digital evidence. He has performed hundreds of forensic acquisitions and examinations, including e-mail and file servers, handheld devices, backup tapes, database systems, and network logs. He has regularly applied digital forensics in response to security breaches to determine the origin, nature and extent of computer intrusions and has utilized forensic and security techniques to secure the affected networks. Among the more significant cases Mr. Casey has handled is the forensic analysis for the government of multiple computers used by members of a militant animal rights organization that made extensive use of encryption, wiping, and disk cleaning tools. In this trial, Mr. Casey testified over the course of two days and was admitted as an expert in digital forensics. Other significant cases Mr. Casey has worked on include employing database forensics in a $40 million lawsuit to determine how proprietary valuation software operated on mainframe data to depreciate a fleet of 40,000 vehicles; a sophisticated network intrusion investigation involving the theft of sensitive data that was tracked back to a well-funded group in China; forensic software analysis for the government of programs falsely advertised as anti-spyware; conducting desktop forensics in an internal corporate investigation where he determined that a memo accusing a banker of foreign corrupt practices was fraudulent and backdated; an in-depth forensic investigation into allegations of spoliation across desktop computers and legacy backup media; and performing forensic analysis in a criminal environment crimes case in which he established that a key document was not backdated, as alleged by the government. In the environment crimes case, the government ultimately stipulated to Mr. Casey s findings. Mr. Casey spearheads Stroz Friedberg s codification of forensic policy and procedures and co-manages Stroz Friedberg s in-house forensic training and research programs. As part of the internal training program, he has lectured on topics including network intrusion investigation, forensic acquisition of storage media and online digital evidence, database forensics, harvesting data from Exchange servers, and methods for assessing whether software is acting as spyware. Mr. Casey is a leading authority in his areas of expertise and has written and lectured extensively both in the United States and abroad on the forensic preservation, examination and analysis of digital evidence from computers and networks, including at the Connecticut State Crime Lab and SEARCH, and conferences sponsored by the Digital Forensics Research Workshop, High Tech Crime Investigators Association, SecureIT, Infragard, and others. He is the author of the widely used text book Digital Evidence and Computer Crime: Forensic Science, Computers and the Internet (Academic Press, 2004), now in its second edition. He is also editor of the Handbook of Computer Crime Investigation: Forensic Tools and Technology (Academic Press, 2001), and co-author of Investigating Child Exploitation and Pornography: The Internet, The Law, and Forensic Science (Elsevier, 2004). Mr. Casey is editor-in-chief of Elsevier's Digital Investigation journal, which publishes articles on digital forensics from international law enforcement, research, corporate information security, legal professionals and government experts on a quarterly basis. He has also written articles on practical approaches to recovering encrypted digital evidence, conducting investigations involving networks, and the uses of forensic psychiatry and criminal profiling in addressing computer crime. Before joining Stroz Friedberg, Mr. Casey assisted law enforcement as a consultant in criminal investigations involving digital evidence. In addition, as an Information Security Officer at Yale University, from 1999 to 2002, and in subsequent consulting work, he has performed vulnerability assessments, handled critical security breaches and policy violations, deployed and maintained intrusion detection systems, firewalls and public key infrastructures, and developed policies, procedures, and educational programs. Since 1996, Mr. Casey has offered online instruction through Knowledge Solutions LLC, a partnership which he co-founded, of practicing forensic professionals committed to providing quality training, information resources, and case consultation. Mr. Casey s courses cover digital evidence and criminal profiling, investigating Internet crime and analyzing digital evidence. Mr. Casey also served as a Senior Research Assistant and Satellite Operator at NASA s Extreme UV Explorer Satellite Project from 1991 to 1995, where he wrote computer programs to automate routine and safety-critical satellite operations. Mr. Casey holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, an M.A. in Educational Communication and Technology from New York University. He is a candidate for a PhD in Computer Science from the University College Dublin
