Ellis Rainsberger joined the Dolphins in 2005 with 12 years of experience as a scout in the NFL, including the previous five (2000-04) with the Tennessee Titans.
While with the Titans, Rainsberger scouted the Southeastern portion of the United States in his first year with the team, and parts of the Midwest and the East over his final four seasons. Prior to joining Tennessee, he spent seven seasons with the Cleveland Browns/ Baltimore Ravens organization (1992-98). During that time, he filled several roles, including college scout, pro personnel/advance scout and assistant defensive line coach.
Before embarking on his NFL career, Rainsberger was an assistant coach at Toledo from 1989-91. Prior to that, Rainsberger worked at the professional level in both the Canadian Football League and the United States Football League. He served as offensive coordinator for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1978-83) and Toronto Argonauts (1986-88) of the CFL, while holding a position on the staffs with the Denver Gold (1983) and Pittsburgh Maulers (1984) of the USFL, having served as the Maulers’ head coach for the second half of the 1984 season. He also was a member of the CFL scouting combine from 1985-86.
Rainsberger was a three-year letterman at Kansas State (1955-57), where he was an All-Big Eight selection twice (1956 and 1957) and an Academic All-America choice once (1957). He served as a team captain his final two years. He also lettered twice in wrestling for the Wildcats, with one Missouri Valley Conference title to his credit. He went on to serve as an assistant coach at Drake from 1959-61, before being appointed head coach at Washburn, from 1962-64. He moved on to an assistant post at Kansas in 1965 before taking a one-year stint as head coach at Southern Illinois in 1966. Stops as an assistant at Illinois (1967-72) and Wisconsin (1973-74) preceded his next head coaching position, at Kansas State from 1975-77.
Rainsberger and his wife, Shirley, have six grown children, Becky, Bud, Cathy, Sandy, Chris and Mike. |
