Other areas of her work include skin cancer prevention, adherence to cancer control regimens, chemoprevention, psychosocial aspects of cancer prevention and early detection (e.g., genetic testing and counseling for hereditary cancers), and quality of life in cancer patients, survivors, and family members.

Gritz has served as author and editor of the Annual Report of the Surgeon General on Smoking and Health, and was a consultant to the Office on Smoking and Health for 20 years. She wrote the section on behavioral aspects of smoking and smoking cessation in the 1980 Report of the Surgeon General-- The Health Consequences of Smoking for Women, the first Surgeon General's Report on women's smoking, and was a contributing editor to the second Report of the Surgeon General on Women and Smoking (2001).

Gritz has served on numerous review and policy boards. She served as co-chair for the NCI Tobacco Research Implementation Group, which produced the Tobacco Research Implementation Plan (November, 1998), a blueprint for tobacco and smoking research into the next decade. She was an invited member of the Cancer Control Program Review Group of the NCI from 1996-1997. From 1997-1999 she served on the National Cancer Policy Board of the IOM and Commission on Life Sciences, and has been a member of the IOM's Board on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention since 1995.

Gritz was president of the American Society of Preventive Oncology (ASPO) from 1993-1995. She was the first recipient of ASPO's Joseph W.
