Doug Whiteman is President of Penguin Group (USA) Books for Young Readers, the children's book division of Penguin Group (USA) Inc. Mr. Whiteman oversees nearly a dozen juvenile imprints, including Dutton Children's Books, G.P. Putnam's Sons, Grosset & Dunlap, Philomel, Dial Books for Young Readers, Planet Dexter, Puffin, and Viking Children's Books. These houses publish some of the most revered children's literature in the world and are home to characters and brands such as Winnie the Pooh, Madeline, The Little Engine That Could, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Spot.
Prior to being named president in 1997, Mr. Whiteman was Senior Vice President and Publisher of the Putnam & Grosset Group, a precursor to Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers (Penguin acquired the Putnam Berkley Group in 1996). Whiteman was responsible for the publishing program, which included five imprints.
Mr. Whiteman began his career at Putnam in 1982 as a sales representative in Denver. In 1986, he moved to New York, assuming the responsibilities of assistant sales and marketing manager. He was promoted in 1987 to director of trade sales and marketing and became a Vice President in 1989. In his positions in sales management he oversaw sales of both the adult and juvenile publishing programs into the national accounts, independents, and mass merchandisers.
Mr. Whiteman was born in 1961. A 1982 graduate of Kansas University's School of Business, he managed two independent bookstores during his college years. |
