Deborah L. Shuff joined the firm in 2002 as an associate in the Commercial Litigation Practice Group, practicing environmental litigation, products liability, and toxic torts.
Known for her skill in complex multi-party litigation, Deborah has handled a variety of federal, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania actions involving various environmental issues including groundwater contamination, soil contamination, natural resource damages and landfill issues. Deborah has litigated actions involving various federal, New Jersey state, and Pennsylvania state statutes, including CERCLA, RCRA, New Jersey Spill Compensation and Control Act, New Jersey Industrial Site Recovery Act, New Jersey Solid Waste Management Act, New Jersey Sanitary Landfill Facility Closure and Contingency Fund Act, New Jersey Planned Real Estate Development Full Disclosure Act and Pennsylvania Storage Tank and Spill Prevention Act.
Notably, Deborah successfully opposed class certification in an alleged contaminated drinking water case in which the contaminants of concern were TCE, PCE, and mercury. The proposed class was approximately 80,000 individuals and the requested remedy was medical monitoring calculated at more than one billion dollars. Deborah has significant experience litigating mass torts and class actions.
Deborah is currently a member of the American Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Philadelphia Bar Association. She is an active member of the Women Rainmakers Committee in the Law Practice Management Section of the American Bar Association as well as the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy and Resources. Deborah is also an active member of the Society of Women Environmental Professionals, Greater Philadelphia Area and New Jersey Chapters.
Deborah is admitted to practice in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Pennsylvania State University, Dickinson School of Law Woolsack Honor Society. While in law school, Deborah served as an articles editor to the Dickinson Law Review. |
