With a background in engineering prototyping, design, flight simulation and 3D graphics software development, David Hughes has over 25 years experience in the advanced visualisation business. During 19 years at Silicon Graphics he held a wide range of technical, commercial and research roles across support, sales, marketing and development functions. Working from SGI's California HQ, he managed the rapid development of the global simulation business, based on the world's first general purpose workstation simulation platform. He was the driving force behind a number of key graphics initiatives within SGI, such as OpenGL PerformerR, the Reality CenterTM environment - an vizualisation facility for advanced decision making, and also Media Fusion (now known as Pixel Fusion Server) - a collaborative 3D workspace for sharing and interacting with complex vizualisation media across networks. David has conceived and managed a number of high profile, breakthrough projects including 'Mummy - The Inside Story', a 120 seat 3D virtual reality theater experience in partnership with the British Museum to visualise and tell the story of a 3500 year old mummy. After a successful exhibition run at the museum, it now continues to tour the world today as a travelling exhibition. This project has been widely covered on national television around the world.In 2006, he set up as an independent consultant, specialising in advising on collaborative visualization concepts and technologies. He is currently working on a next generation collaborative concept for offshore operations in the North Sea oil industry. He is an Honorary Professor of Glasgow University, a fellow of Teesside University and was awarded Computing UK IT Professional of the Year in 2002. He lives in the UK. |
