David J. Mazzo is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Aeterna Zentaris, Inc. Dr. Mazzo is a pharmaceutical executive and strategic leader with broad technical and managerial experience gained from working in a variety of multi-cultural and multi-lingual environments in the USA, Europe and Asia. He is recognized for his strong scientific and regulatory expertise, upon which he has amassed a track record of more than 20 years of successful global product development, registration and launch. Dr. Mazzo has proven himself to be a change leader uniquely adept at integrating disparate groups, turning around organizations and driving working groups to new levels of performance and achievement.
Dr. Mazzo has spent his entire career within the pharmaceutical industry, rising quickly from a laboratory bench position to occupy positions of increasing responsibility with Merck, Baxter, Rhône-Poulenc Rorer, Hoechst Marion Roussel, Schering-Plough and Chugai. The diversity of his assignments has resulted in an expertise across all therapeutic areas as well as the whole of the drug development process from Discovery to Manufacturing to Product Commercialization. He served as President and CEO of the USA subsidiary in his immediate precedent role with Chugai.
Dr. Mazzo earned his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry as well as an M.S. in Chemistry at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst). He also holds dual degrees [B.S. in Chemistry and B.A. in Honors (Interdisciplinary Humanities)] from Villanova University. He complemented his American education as a Research Fellow at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.
Dr. Mazzo has published often and is frequently invited to present at international meetings on a wide variety of topics. He regularly contributes to the education of the next generation of scientists and leaders by teaching at the University of Massachusetts. He is an active member of several scientific and professional societies, including AAPS, ACS and AOAC International. Dr. Mazzo is the editor of International Stability Testing, a reference text for regulators and the pharmaceutical industry and has been a contributing editor of Analytical Profiles of Drug Substances and Excipients. He also has made contributions to the ICH guidelines for stability (Q1A/B/C), impurities in drug substances and drug products (Q3A/B), and the common technical registration dossier (M4) and has served as a member of the Orally Inhaled and Nasal Drug Products subcommittee of the FDA Advisory Committee for Pharmaceutical Science. Dr. Mazzo serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Avanir Pharmaceuticals and as non-executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of pSivida, Ltd. He is also President of the Board of Trustees of Bonnie Brae Residential Treatment Center for Adolescent Boys (Liberty Corner, NJ). |
