David Kuhn Biography :

Dr. David E. Kuhn is a research scientist at The Kennedy Krieger Institute and a Case Manager on the Neurobehavioral Unit. He is also an Instructor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Biographical Sketch:

Dr. Kuhn graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1993 with a B.A. in behavioral biology. He subsequently earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 2004 at Louisiana State University with a specialization in mental retardation and developmental disabilities. He completed a pre-doctoral Internship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, and Department of Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Kuhn is currently a member of the faculty at Kennedy Krieger Institute where he serves as a case manager on the Neurobehavioral Unit in the Department of Behavioral Psychology, and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He is a Psychology Associate in the State of Maryland.

Dr. Kuhn has served as a guest reviewer for numerous journals, including the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, Journal of Clinical Child Psychology, Research in Developmental Disabilities, Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, American Journal on Mental Retardation, and the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. He is an active member of, and is currently President-Elect of the Maryland Association for Behavior Analysis.

Research Summary:

The presence of severe problem behavior (e.g., self-injurious behavior, aggression, property destruction, pica) is significantly more prevalent among individuals diagnosed with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. Dr. Kuhn’s training and education has focused on the assessment and treatment of these problem behaviors, which interfere with adaptive functioning. His research has involved the application and adaptation of principles of applied behavior analysis towards skill acquisition and behavior reduction among individuals with developmental disabilities. Dr. Kuhn’s current research focuses on increasing behavioral repertoires (e.g., toy play and social skills) among individuals diagnosed with Autistic Disorder as an approach to both increase adaptive behavior and decrease problem behavior.
