David Levy Biography :

David C. Levy has been CIG’s principal advisor since the acquisition of Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London in 2003. He formally joined the CIG team as President of the CIG Education Group in December 2006. David left his home town of New York in 1991 to lead Washington’s largest private cultural institution, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and its College of Art and Design, where he served as its President and Director until 2005. Prior to leaving New York he was Chancellor of NewSchool University, a post he accepted after completing 20 years at the helm of Parsons School of Design. During his tenure at Parsons, David built it from a small school with fewer than 500 students into an international institution with an enrollment of 12,000 and a world-wide network of campuses including Los Angeles, Paris, The Dominican Republic and Japan. He also developed innovative scholarly programs in England, Italy, France, Israel, Greece and West Africa. A life-long professional jazz musician as well as an art historian, photographer and designer, David founded New York’s first degree granting school of jazz, which thrives today as one of the world’s leading jazz conservatories, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. During his tenure at Parsons and The New School he initiated and oversaw the mergers of the Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles County into Parsons and the Mannes College of Music into the New School. In the mid-1990s, while at the Corcoran, David founded and developed the Delaware College of Art and Design in Wilmington, Delaware.David earned a BA degree from Columbia and a PhD from New York University. He is a Trustee of the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers (Scholastic Art & Writing Awards), the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts and the American Federation of Arts, a founding trustee of The Jazz Museum in Harlem and a former Commissioner of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Levy was decorated as Chevalier des arts et des Lettres by the Republic of France, was named Washingtonian of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine and received the New York State Regents’ Award for distinguished service to Higher Education. He was awarded the degrees of Doctor of Fine Arts, Honorus Causa by Cedar Crest College and by The New School University. David resides in Washington, DC with his wife Carole and their son Alexander.
