David A. Stonecipher, FSA, is lead director of Lincoln National Corporation. Stonecipher is a native of Cleveland, Tennessee, and received a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University in 1962 and a master’s degree from Georgia State University in 1967. He earned the designation of Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in 1970. Following service in the U.S. Army from 1962-64, Stonecipher joined Life of Georgia in Atlanta as an actuarial trainee. He was elected senior vice president and actuary in 1978, executive vice president in 1984, president and chief operating officer in 1989 and CEO in 1991 of both Life of Georgia and Southland Life Insurance Company, and president and member of the board of GeorgiaUS Corporation, subsidiary of ING Corporation. Stonecipher joined Jefferson-Pilot Corporation in September of 1992, as CEO-elect. He became President and Chief Executive Officer of both the Jefferson-Pilot Corporation and Jefferson-Pilot Life Insurance Company on March 1, 1993 and Chairman of the Board on May 4, 1998. Stonecipher is past chairman of the board of the American Council of Life Insurers, Greensboro (N.C.) Development Corporation, and the Greater Greensboro Open. He currently serves on the board of Bassett Furniture Industries, Inc., McKenney’s Corporation and International Home Furnishings Center, Inc. He is a member of the Society of Actuaries and the American Academy of Actuaries. Stonecipher is a former member of the board of The Financial Services Roundtable, the Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association, North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry, North Carolina Governors Council, Greensboro Community Foundation, Greensboro and Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and United Way and the board of trustees for the McCallie School. He also is a former member of the Greensboro and Atlanta Rotary Clubs. |
