Daniel Alcott is a partner in the Transactional Department and the founding member of the Firm’s Tax Exempt Organizations Practice Group which was launched in May, 2006. Mr. Alcott has extensive experience representing public charities, private foundations, venture philanthropists, trade associations, museums, commercial co-venturers, corporate sponsors, professional fundraisers and socially responsible profit seeking businesses dedicated to supporting charitable causes. He has advised a wide variety of individuals and entities ranging from (i) large institutions including the March of Dimes, the Polo Ralph Lauren Foundation, the Entertainment Industry Foundation, The Dana Foundation and The Dr. Robert C. Atkins Foundation, (ii) middle-market groups including the Westchester Children’s Museum, The Jed Foundation, Peter Glenville Foundation, and Exploring the Arts (Tony Bennett’s foundation) to (iii) start up ventures including a number of charities formed for diverse purposes after 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. As a specialist in both nonprofit and business law, Mr. Alcott has provided a range of legal services to nonprofits including corporate formation, governance, cause related marketing, fundraising, contracts, sponsorships and licensing. He has resolved disputes on behalf of a number of entities in connection with IRS and state regulatory compliance matters, investigations and tax matters. Mr. Alcott is also a leading expert in the emerging field of social entrepreneurship, advising nonprofits seeking sustainability through business activity, as well as socially responsible businesses in activities including the structuring of charitable giving programs and capital raising through private equity offerings or debt financing. Mr. Alcott is recognized by his peers as an expert on nonprofit governance and serves on the board of directors of Governance Matters (formerly the Alliance for Nonprofit Governance), a not-for-profit membership corporation dedicated to improving governance in the not-for-profit sector. In September, 2005, he was appointed by the President of the New York State Bar Association to serve on a special committee on governance to report on the internal controls and governance of the Bar Association and he is a frequent lecturer in continuing legal education programs. Mr. Alcott was initially trained at large New York law firms in bankruptcy and financial restructuring prior to concentrating in the tax exempt area. He is licensed in New York and Connecticut and is admitted in the state and federal courts located in those jurisdictions. |
