Cory Welch Biography :

Mr. Welch is a Senior Consultant with Summit Blue Consulting. He has 13 years of analysis, project management, and engineering experience in fields including energy R&D portfolio and policy analysis, power plant engineering, and fuel cells. Mr. Welch brings expertise in Systems-Based Modeling and Analyses, Risk Assessment, Choice-Based Modeling, Risk Analysis and Statistics, which he has applied to various analysis projects for the U.S. Department of Energy. Prior to joining Summit Blue in January 2008, Mr. Welch was a Senior Energy Analyst at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, where most recently he led a team of six national laboratories in the development of the Stochastic Energy Deployment Systems model (SEDS) a new stochastic, dynamic, energy-economy model that will be used to guide the U.S. Department of Energy in the development of its R&D portfolio and energy policy. In addition to his analytical skills, Mr. Welch possesses a strong background in project management. While a program manager at UTC Power, he led a $30-million program to develop and manufacture fuel cell stacks for Nissan Motor Company and led a team of 40 engineers to develop a fuel cell power plant for Hyundai Motor Company. Adding to his capabilities is his tenure as an officer in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a fluid systems engineer in the highly regarded Naval Reactors program. Specific experience includes the following: National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Golden, CO Senior Project Leader, Senior Energy Analyst, Hydrogen Technologies and Systems Center, Strategic Energy Analysis and Applications Center Led a team of six national laboratories in developing a stochastic, dynamic energy-economy model to advise the U.S. Department of Energy regarding their R&D portfolio. Co-developed a spatial, dynamic model to advise the U.S. Department of Energy regarding hydrogen transition strategies and policy. Led a team of five consultants (PA Consulting, Knowledge Networks) in a Discrete Choice Analysis project to quantify consumer sensitivity to limited alternative fuel station coverage. Developed a novel statistical method projecting fuel cell engine life for General Motors, Ford, Hyundai, and Chrysler LLC (formerly DaimlerChrysler) fuel cell engines. UTC Power (formerly UTC Fuel Cells), South Windsor, CT Program Manager, Project Engineer Led a team of 40 engineers in the development of a freeze-capable fuel cell system for Hyundai Motor Company. Led a two-year, $30M program to develop, manufacture, and deliver freeze-capable fuel cell stacks for Nissan Motor Company. U.S. Navy (Naval Reactors), Arlington, VA Fluid Systems Engineer (Mechanical/Nuclear) Evaluated and provided final approval of technical recommendations regarding the operation and maintenance of power plant fluid systems in aircraft carriers. Mr. Welch holds an SM in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), an MBA from M.I.T. s Sloan School of Management, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University.
