Dr. Dykstra received her PhD degree in genetics from the University of Georgia in 1984. Dr. Dykstra did postdoctoral work in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in 1986, moved to Research Triangle Park where she was a National Research Council Associate in the Laboratory of Genetics at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. In 1989, Dr. Dykstra was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1995 Dr. Dykstra moved to Auburn University where she holds the appointment of Associate Professor in the Pathobiology Department at Auburn University, College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Dykstra has extensive experience in the analysis of proteins that interact with nucleic acids as well as expertise in cloning and the analysis of genes. Currently, Dr. Dykstra’s research has both a basic and applied aspect towards the study of infectious diseases. It is centered on the utilization of novel therapeutic agents for the identification and analysis of their targets in order to develop an increased knowledge of both the disease-causing organism and how the novel agent exerts its activity. Her area of expertise is in DNA-dependent enzymes and the molecular analysis of their genes.
