Bruce G. Pitts, M.D., serves as the senior executive of Clinical and Academic Services for MeritCare and as the Associate Dean of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences (UNDSMHS). A Senior Executive since 1997 and a practicing Internal Medicine Specialist at MeritCare since 1982, Dr. Pitts plays a vital role in daily operations and long-term planning.
His leadership role at MeritCare includes the oversight of a number of outpatient and inpatient clinical departments, medical education, research, Quality Management, Health Information Management, hospital and retail pharmacies, Material Services, Home Health Services, Health Care Accessories, and Ask-a-Nurse. In his role at UNDSMHS Dr. Pitts is responsible for overseeing the school's educational activities on the Fargo campus and its residencies in Grand Forks, Bismarck, Minot, and Fargo.
Dr. Pitts is a native of Rhode Island and received his undergraduate degree from Yale. He then took his medical training in Philadelphia, earning his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania and pursuing his residency in internal medicine at Temple University Hospital.
To repay a medical school scholarship obligation to the United States Public Health Service, Dr. Pitts practiced medicine in Barnesville, Minn. after completing his residency. During those years he acquired a deep appreciation for the fine medicine practiced in the region, for the virtues of multi-specialty group practice, and for the people, values, and quality of life of the Red River Valley. These factors shaped his decision to join MeritCare's Department of Internal Medicine in 1982. In 2005, Dr. Pitts received his Masters in Business Administration in Medical Group Management from the University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis, Minn.
Striving to "provide better care for more people," Dr. Pitts finds his work exciting, challenging and rewarding. He firmly believes MeritCare's strengths are grounded in "the diversity, the abilities, and the dedication of the people associated with the organization."
Dr. Pitts and his wife, Ryn, have two grown children. In his spare time he enjoys fly fishing and writing. |
