Bruce Maffeo Biography :

Law Practice J. Bruce B. Maffeo is a litigation attorney and co-chair of the Criminal Defense law practice in the New York City office of Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C.. Having joined the firm as a member in January 2007, Mr. Maffeo represents individuals and organizations charged with crimes and regulatory offenses before the state and federal courts as well as attorneys involved in disciplinary proceedings. Mr. Maffeo has litigated cases involving public corruption, extortion, fraud, tax evasion, anti-trust, and RICO. He has successfully argued to limit the use of the federal mail fraud statute in prosecuting state public officials. See United States v. Ganim, 2002 WL 31780856 (D. Conn. Dec. 12, 2002). Among other matters, Mr. Maffeo represented former Teamsters vice-president Gene Giacumbo in his successful appeal from a life-time bar from union membership. See United States v. IBT ("Giacumbo"), 170 F.3d 136 (2d Cir. 1999). Professional Profile Prior to joining the firm Mr. Maffeo was in private practice since 1989. Mr. Maffeo was also a Special Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice's Organized Crime Strike Force for the Eastern District of New York from 1984-1989, where he prosecuted a number of publicized RICO cases, including United States v. Schwimmer, 924 F.2d 443 (2d Cir. 1991), which expanded the scope of criminal liability for financial advisors to employee benefit plans, and United States v. Vario, et al., a labor racketeering indictment returned against the leadership of Laborers Local 66, the largest construction union on Long Island. Before joining the Justice Department, Mr. Maffeo served as a senior trial attorney in the Homicide Bureau of the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office from 1979-1984.Professional Affiliations Mr. Maffeo is a member of the bar of the States of New York and New Hampshire as well as the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the District of Connecticut, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He is a member of the New York Council of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Recognition Mr. Maffeo currently serves as Ethical Practice Officer for District Council 37, New York City's largest municipal union, in which capacity he investigates allegations of financial impropriety and wrongdoing. He also has written and lectured on the criminal prosecution and government regulation of labor unions and has conducted internal investigations on behalf of several union locals. He currently serves as outside counsel to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, where, among other matters, he represents the Teamsters in United States v. IBT, 88 Civ. 4486 (LAP), a court approved settlement of the historic civil racketeering suit filed by the government against the union. Mr. Maffeo is rated "AV" by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest level in professional excellence and ethics.
