The Dallas Cowboys completed their coaching staff on March 1, 2007 with the hiring of Brian Stewart as their defensive coordinator. Stewart worked under Wade Phillips with the San Diego Chargers as the secondary coach and is very familiar with the "Phillips 3-4" scheme.
Stewart helped the Chargers secondary make rapid improvements during his three year tenure in San Diego. Cornerback Quentin Jammer led the team with four interceptions and posted a career high 89 tackles in 2006 - as the AFC West Champions closed the year ranked fourth in the NFL in total defense. In 2004 and 2005 the Chargers' secondary allowed only 38 touchdown passes under Stewart's guidance after the team surrendered 36 touchdown passes in 2003.
Stewart made the jump to the professional ranks in 2002, joining the Houston Texans as the assistant defensive backs coach for two years. He originally found his way to the NFL through the League's Minority Coaching Fellowship Program, working at training camps with both the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins.
Prior to joining the NFL, Stewart spent one season (2001) as the defensive backs coach at Syracuse University where he worked under current Cowboys linebackers coach Paul Pasqualoni. The '01 the Orangemen finished 10-3 and forced the second-most turnovers in the Big East Conference. As an assistant at Missouri, from 1999-2000, he mentored two-time All-Big 12 free safety Julian Jones, who led the conference in 1999 with six interceptions. He coached defensive backs for San Jose State University from 1997-98, and the 1998 Spartans recorded 20 interceptions. In 1996, he served as a defensive graduate assistant for Missouri. Stewart also coached tight ends and special teams at Northern Arizona University in 1995.
Stewart played both cornerback and free safety in college. He began his collegiate career at Northern Arizona University, then transferred to Santa Monica City College for two seasons before graduating from Northern Arizona with a degree in criminal justice.
