Ben Fathi Biography :

As corporate vice president of the Security Technology Unit (STU) for Microsoft Corp., Ben Fathi leads Microsoft’s efforts to provide customers with a more secure platform. Fathi is responsible for ensuring that the STU continues to implement the company’s vision to establish trust in computing to realize the full potential of an interconnected world. Fathi’s focus is on driving Microsoft’s security vision to create a world in which people and organizations can use a variety of devices and always be securely connected to the information, services and people that matter most to them. He is responsible for delivering a security architecture that will enable a trust ecosystem, provide compelling solutions for managing identity, continue to engineer for security, bring simplicity to security solutions, and innovate to always deliver on Microsoft’s vision for a fundamentally secure platform.

Fathi also oversees Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to enhance security by making the right technology investments, by providing clear guidance to customers about maintaining better protection, and by addressing industry challenges through partnerships in the public and private sectors.

Supporting Fathi in these efforts are two security-focused development teams. The Security Protection Technologies team is responsible for innovating core protection technologies such as anti-virus, anti-spyware and network security software, which is implemented in various products across the company. The Windows® Security team is responsible for core security features in Microsoft® Windows such as authentication, authorization and audit capabilities (AAA); Windows Rights Management Services (RMS); and BitLocker™ Drive Encryption; as well as the long-term security architecture strategy.

Finally, Fathi leads the Security Engineering and Communications team and the Security Outreach team. The Security Engineering and Communications team works with the industry to deliver improved security, helps protect customers via the Microsoft Security Response Center, and implements the Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) process across the company. The Security Outreach team focuses on satisfying the security needs of consumers, developers and IT professionals. This effort involves evaluating the security landscape, listening to customer needs, building strong partnerships across the industry, and ensuring that proper security guidance is shared with customers and developers.

Fathi joined Microsoft in 1998. He most recently served as general manager for Storage and High Availability in the Windows division, where he was responsible for the Windows Powered Network Attached Storage (NAS) — an optimized file server based on Windows technology — and branch office businesses. In addition, Fathi directed the development of storage, file systems, file protocols and clustering technologies for Windows. He has worked in the computer industry for 25 years. Before joining Microsoft, he was director of operating systems at Silicon Graphics Inc., where he managed all operating system development. Fathi’s own development background is in memory management, symmetric and NUMA multiprocessor architectures as well as central processing unit and input/output subsystems. Fathi holds a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Massachusetts, as well as bachelor’s degrees in computer science and psychology from the university. Fathi is married and has a daughter.
