Barbara Handelin Biography :

Dr. Handelin is a seasoned biotech business executive and board certified Medical Geneticist (Molecular and Biochemical Genetics) who has pioneered the responsible application of genetics to clinical medicine and drug development research over a 16 year career. In 1987 Dr. Handelin established what became the largest commercial DNA testing laboratory in the world at Integrated Genetics (now Genzyme Genetics). Her laboratory was the first commercial testing lab to incorporate PCR technology in 1988, one of several ‘firsts’ that Integrated Genetics’ DNA Laboratory under Dr. Handelin’s leadership was to achieve. Dr. Handelin was a principal advisor to clinical laboratory regulators on developing standards for clinical DNA testing, the founder of a leadership group on developing ethical standards for genetic testing (1990), and among the first dozen medical geneticists to be board certified by the American College of Medical Genetics in Molecular and Biochemical Genetics (1992). After being recruited to found a gene therapy company in the Philadelphia region, Dr. Handelin founded her own consulting practice, Handelin Associates, in the biopharmaceutical and technology transfer sector. She delivered consulting services to venture capital investors, CEOs of new technology companies, senior business development executives of biotechnology, diagnostics, genomics, pharmacogenomics and bioinformatics companies and biomedical universities. In particular, Dr. Handelin consulted extensively with Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Eurona A/B, Variagenics, Roche Molecular Systems and Affymetrix in developing strategies for their pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine initiatives. In 2000, Dr. Handelin founded Kenna Technologies, a computational biology, systems biology company developing computer models for R&D use in drug and diagnostics development. She served as CEO of Kenna until it was acquired in 2005 by DNA Print Pharmaceuticals. Currently Dr. Handelin is GM of Computational Biology and Director of Diagnostics at DNAPP. Dr. Handelin served on advisory boards of two biotech companies and for 10 years as a board member of the IRB education organization, Public Responsibility in Medicine asnd Research (PRIM&R). She has served on a variety of federal committees and advisory panels on genetic testing and pharmacogenetics including the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society, and was the Principal Investigator on a DOE ELSI grant on The Responsibility of Oversight in Genetics Research: How to Enable Effective Human Subjects Review of Public and Privately Funded Research Programs. Dr. Handelin took her Ph.D. at the Oregon Health Sciences University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has authored journal publications in human genetics, bioethics for industry and genetics education. Dr. Handelin has served on the Board since February 1, 2005.
