Augusto Escalante Juanes is the Corporate Director of Consumer Products and Marketing of Banamex as of January 2000. His responsibilities cover Banamex´s Cards business (credit and debit), liability management products, payments and cash management (eBanking, ATM´s, acquiring business), as well as marketing, with a workforce of close to a 1,000 employees. In addition to his current responsibilities, he is a participant in the negotiations leading to new interchange fee and payment mechanism structures that are shaping the future of Mexico´s payment system. He has also positioned Banamex as a sponsor for elite athletes and sports clubs in Mexico as well as a major contributor and participant in non-for-profit events and organizations. He is a member of Citi’s Management Committee.
He started his career with Banamex in 1979 in corporate banking. He later moved to Los Angeles, California, USA, as Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer of California Commerce Bank, a subsidiary of Banamex. During that time he was also a member of the Management Board of Ammex Holding, Co.
In 1991, Mr. Escalante Juanes returned to Mexico as Executive Vice President of Banking Products and Services and launched several innovative products in the Mexican market. In 1994, he was named Deputy President for Consumer Loan Products covering the Mortgage, Auto, and Personal Loans business.
He has been a member of MasterCard International Board and Regional Board since 1997 and became President of MasterCard’s Regional Board in 2002. He has also participated in several Senior Banking Committees of the Mexican Banks Association (ABM).
Mr. Escalante Juanes holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from Anáhuac University in Mexico City and an MBA from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, USA.
