Anne Turner-henson Biography :

Dr. Turner-Henson practices in a community-based, nurse-managed center at a local Head Start agency where, along with undergraduate and graduate nursing students, she provides health promotion and disease prevention services to Head Start children and staff. She along with Dr. Feinstein are investigators on a National Heart, Lung Blood Institute funded study (collaborators from Schools of Medicine and Public Health and Children's Hospital) examining the sensitivity and specificity of an asthma screening procedure for school-age children. Dr. Turner-Henson is principal investigator of a CDC project examining the effectiveness of a community-based intervention in reducing secondhand smoke exposure among Head Start children. One key feature of this project is to actively involve a partnership between the young mother (many of them are adolescents) and child to reduce secondhand smoke exposure.

Dr. Turner-Henson received funding from the Environmental Protection Agency to establish the Greater Birmingham Children's Environmental Health Initiative. The purpose of the initiative was to reduce inner city children's exposure to environmental hazards through community based education and empowerment.

Dr. Turner-Henson's previous research focused on the everyday life experiences of children with special health care needs. Along with Dr. Bonnie Holaday, Dr. Turner-Henson was Principal Investigator on a federally funded study conducted in Birmingham, AL and San Francisco, CA that examined use of time out-of-school in chronically ill children (ages 10-12). She has conducted two collaborative international studies examining health and parenting stress in families with young chronically ill children.
